HOPE – Voters in the Hope Public School District returned two incumbents to office and elected one new school board member in districtwide elections here Tuesday.

Former board president attorney Joe Short, did not seek re-election to the Zone 4 seat he has held since 1996. Short’s is the second-longest service on the school board.

Hope Police Department Detective Jimmy Courtney won the Zone 4 seat with 49 votes to 16 votes for Dee Godwin.

In Zone 6, incumbent trustee Denny Dickinson won re-election by a single vote, 58-57, over Sylvia Brown.

In Zone 7, Jesus Coronado, currently serving as board secretary, was not opposed for re-election, and received six votes. Coronado, a Hope Police Department criminal investigative division lieutenant, has served on the board since 2009.

The HPSD millage was not subject to change in the election, and was re-adopted by voters with 149 votes in favor and 103 votes against.

The board voted in June to continue conducting its trustee elections in September, as opposed to consolidating with the November general election date, as allowed by a change in the law.
