HOPE – Ten Hope High School students will represent the Hope Public Schools at the two-day “Beyond Civility” program of the prestigious Winthrop Rockefeller Institute of the University of Arkansas System.
HHS ninth grade students Kendrien Piggee, Javion Hunter and Za’Kiah Randle, 10th grade students Ammorrion Dempsey, Richard Ware, Diego Ortiz, and Justin Armstrong, and 11th grade students Brook Hunt, Ke’Ara Key, and Monzerratt Leija will represent the Hope Pubic Schools.
The Nov. 6-7 dialogue-based event is a program of the Winrock Institute at Petit Jean Mountain near Monticello which accepts students from only four Arkansas school districts annually. Hope students will participate with students from Springdale, Monticello and West Memphis.
“This program is built around the meaning and importance of civil conversations and how to engage in meaningful and respectful dialogue in order to foster collaboration, promote mutual understanding and resolve conflict,” the Winrock website states.
Students who represent diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds from among student leaders, peer influencers, or stereotyped “minority” viewpoints participate in facilitated exercises emphasizing active listening skills and practical applications for reflecting civil behavior and respectful dialogue, according to the institute’s website.
